Tips and Tricks for Getting Long Hair

longhair

Most of us can relate to the time in our life where we decided to chop off our locks in hopes of better, healthier hair.  But the months, or years (eeeek) have passed and you’re still inches away from the Repunzelesqe hair you’ve always dreamed of.  Don’t get me wrong….short styles are super hot too, but there is something about long, cascading hair that makes the men’s heads turn and women growling with envy.

Believe it or not, there are certain tips and tricks of the trade that will not only ensure your hair will grow in quicker, but also much more healthy and vibrant.  That being said, not everyone has the ability to grow super long tresses….there is such a thing as “terminal length” which refers to the maximum length your hair will grow.  However, many people believe their “terminal length” is much shorter then it actually is.

Start with a Good Cut

Hopefully at this point in your life, you have found a stylist that you trust and feel comfortable expressing your “hair future” with!  Getting a good cut to trim your ends and layers on a regular basis will keep your strands happy and more eager to grow.

Be Gentle

Using the right tools/accessories on your hair will go a long way when it comes to growing out your hair.  Always use a wide-tooth comb when brushing out wet hair.  Swap out your plastic bristle brushes for natural bristles to promote shine and prevent breakage.  Do not use metal clips or hair bands.  Avoid pulling hair back into tight combs or ponytails as this actually inhibits hair growth.  The looser the style, the better.  For a selection of approved combs/brushes, click here.

Eat the Right Foods

You’ve heard the term, you are what you eat….and that absolutely applies to your hair!  Eating enough fruits, vegetables, good fats and lean protein does wonders for healthy hair growth.  Lean protein is essential in building strong, healthy strands.  Also, make drinking water a priority in your day!  I know you’ve probably heard this like a million times, but it absolutely makes such a difference.  One trick I use, is everytime I am getting ready (hair and make-up), I also use the time to hydrate and get a portion of my daily water count in ;-)

Be Smart with Styling

Overusing heat tools, dyes and treatments on your hair, will have a huge effect on growing out your hair.  However, a lot of professional tools and products are designed with your hair in mind and actually aid in providing you with healthy, long hair.  Look for tools that contain tourlamine, which seal your cuticle and help prevent against heat damage.  I really love the Karmin G3 Salon Pro Hair Styling Flat Iron.

Be Patient

Hair grows an average of half an inch per month, maybe more if you are really taking care of it.  In the meantime, if you are really coveting those longer locks, try using Remy Human Hair Extensions, which are super easy to put in and style.

Do you have any tips and tricks for growing out your hair?  Would love to hear from you!

Thanks so much for reading :-)

How to: Sex Siren Waves

Party-Hairstyles-For-Long-Hair

With the change of the leaves, it only means one thing….PARTY season is fast approaching.  Gone be the days of outside, laid back BBQ’ing and HELLO Glitzy, Glam, Indoor Soiree’s!  Beachy Waves are replaced with Sexy, Voluptuous Curls and Bronze skin is replaced with Stand-out Lips.  Dressing up and looking ultra feminine is one of my favourite things about cooler weather.  Scarves, chunky knits, faux-fur, pearls, LBD’s, oh, and SEX SIREN WAVES!!!

Sex Siren hair starts with the fundamentals.  With all of the fall/winter outside elements, your hair bares a lot of abuse.  Just as you take care of sun damaged hair during the summer months, being proactive will keep your hair in check and ready to style effortlessly.  Using a mask like the Macadamia Oil Mask, will do wonders in the protection and repair department.  Also, be sure to use a wide tooth comb like the Olivia Garden Bamboo Comb Large 6″, to avoid breakage and frizz.

Now that your hair is prepped and given some LOVE, here’s how to get those super sultry, knock ‘em dead waves:

  1. Seperate hair into first bottom section and spray with a heat spray, like the Redken Spray Starch 15 (loving that right now!)
  2. Using a Reverse Wand (provide such interesting, tousled curls), like the Karmin Salon Pro Clipless Tourmaline Curling Iron , begin wrapping 1 inch sections around the barrel with the narrowest part facing down.  Be sure to use the heat protectant glove (especially if you’re just getting used to it) to avoid burning your fingers!
  3. Hold the curl on the barrel for around 10 seconds and gently release.  If you are wanting less of a curl, hold for less time and use slightly larger sections.
  4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for the rest of your hair.
  5. Once cooled, finger through all of your curls to break them up and make them look less “polished”.  Use a curl definition/hold spray, like Redken’s WaxBlast 10 all over hair.
  6. Using a flat iron, like the the Karmin Titanium Hair Straightener, flat iron the crown of your hair (just the first 1″ inch from your scalp down the strand.)  I find this takes the look from bedhead to bombshell.
  7. Spray with shine spray to eliminate frizz.

This curl will usually last you AT LEAST two days, which is totally worth all the styling time.  Plus, now that your hair is styled there are a plethora of super hot-right-now styles you can rock with ease!

Casual Updo

I love Brooklyn Decker’s casual, yet super sexy updo.   Achieve this look by pulling hair into low bun and loosely securing with bobby pins.  Don’t be afraid to let a few pieces loose to fall around your face.

Partial Updo

Great for Day 2 curls, this ultra femme look is ready to roll in minutes.   Simply secure top section of your hair with a super girly clip and voila!  Sex Siren at your service ;-)

Messy High Bun

Last but definitely not least, is the infamous high bun.  I have been LOVING this trend for the past few months, and it is soooo much easier when your hair is curlier with product.  For best results, tip head upside down to gather your hair for the bun.  Secure in place with pins or ponytail holders.  If need be, freshen up fallen out curls with your curling wand.

Please let me know what your favourite style is!

MTV Video Music Awards 2012 (VMA’s)

Ahhhh that time of year again…where we get to see all of our Hollywood Hot-Listers stroll down the red carpet in their Sunday best!  I absolutely LOVE award season (for obvious reasons) and always enjoy narrowing down my Top Hair Picks.

This year really took me by suprise.  It seemed like most of the stars you expected high impact fashion and hair from, took the easy way out whereas a lot of the young crowd really stepped it up and took chances.

And the award for best hair goes to………Miley!  Just a few months ago I was writing about how awful I thought her ombre locks were and now she’s made it to the Best Hair lists everywhere!  Absolutely stunning, sexy and chic, Miley proved she is all grown up with this trendsetting mohawk-style.

Speaking of all grown up…..Taylor Swift was ALL woman at this year’s VMA’s.  Sleek long hair with brow-grazing fringe is at sophisticated as it is on trend.  Paired with brick red lipstick and statement eyes, I am sure this look will be popular this Fall.  For sleek, shiny locks like Taylor’s, try the Karmin G3 Salon Pro Flat Iron.

Ok, I might be a little bias on this style (I wear it like, always), but you can never go wrong with side swept mermaid curls!!  I absolutely fell in love with Demi last night on the X Factor and know she will be a moving on up on the trend ladder.  Ensure when you are curling your hair to wrap the hair around the barrel away from the face to get beautiful curls like Demi.  For best results, use a clipless curling iron like the Coriliss Magic Wand.

Last but DEFINATELY not least, is the beautiful Kat Graham of The Vampire Diaries.  Elegant, soft waves paired with Oxblood lips, a Tuxedo style suit jacket and animal print…somebody definitely did her homework ;-)   To get this look, I would recommend using your flat iron to create slight curls in the hair, then brush through and spray with a shine/hold spray.

What were your fave pics of the VMA’s?

Spice up your Style!

I understand how it is….you have finally found the perfect cut and color and you don’t want to mess with a good thing!  Yes, it can be very daunting to switch it up for a fresh new look or style.   But every once in a while, we need to take a step back and make sure that our style isn’t stuck in a previous decade!  Here are a couple of fresh new style ideas that are gracing the heads of Hollywood’s finest.

Pretty Pastels

After researching this topic and sorting through hundreds of pastel-coloured hairstyles, let me just say this trend almost needs an article all to itself!  Perhaps soon!  I love Rachel McAdams soft fairytale pink highlights.  Paired with a Blonde multi layered bob, this look is as sexy as it is on trend.  If you`re not quite ready to convince your stylist to break out the pink dye, try some clip in extensions like Pro-Extensions Human Hair Extension Highlight Streak Pack.  Some other beautiful shades to try include lavender, mint, or soft blue.

The Braided Bun

If there is anyone we can trust for fresh new looks, its Blake Lively.  We all know how popular the plethora of braids were this Summer, so its nice to see it transition into fall!  The best of both worlds, this look is elegant and easy.  Paired with glowing skin and statement earrings, this one will be a head turner for sure!

Super Short

For anyone with super long hair, this might be a huge step for you!  But fair not, it is so super fierce.  Obviously, this trend isn’t for everybody, (see my article on Finding the Right Cut for your Face Shape) but when done right it can look absolutely stunning!!  Rhianna′s cheekbones and eyes are the main focus now, instead of hidden under a pile of curly red hair!

How To: Lana Del Rey’s Red Carpet Hair

When I first saw this picture of Lana Del Rey at the 65th Cannes Festival, my heart nearly skipped a beat.  She looked absolutely stunning with her flowing side swept curls that have since been mimicked by some of Hollywood’s hottest leading ladies.

To get this songstresses super sexy mane, try these tips:

For best results, work on “day 2″ hair.  Clean hair doesn’t hold as well and is much harder to tease.

Create a deep  side part, then clip up top section of your hair.  Using a large barrelled curling iron like the Coriliss Magic Wand, begin curling hair halfway down each 1″ section you curl.

Hold curl for about 3-4 seconds and slowly release curl to not disturb it’s shape.  DO NOT finger curls or comb through.  We want a somewhat polished curl.  (Don’t forget to use a heat protectant spray before beginning styling!)

Complete this process throughout the rest of your hair until you get to your top crown layer.  Take a teasing comb and tease generously throughout the crown to create volume at your roots.

Using a flat iron, style bangs and other pieces around your face with a slight flip on ends.  (See my article on How I create curls with my Karmin Flat Iron for more details)

Finish hair with a spray shine serum and/or hairspray to complete the look!

Where will you wear your Red Carpet Hair?  Let me know!!!

Caring for Real Hair Extensions

hair extensions1

You have finally purchased your very first set of all natural human hair extensions, hooray!  Hair extensions are such a fabulous way to add length, volume and style to your hair.  Whether you choose clip ins or tape ins, the options are endless and the prices are affordable.  So how do you protect your newest prized possession?

Treat you extensions like you should treat your own hair.  Meaning taking care not to damage it, subject it to damaging UV’s, brush, break, style and bleach.  I know, we treat our own hair like this pretty much on a daily basis.  But when it comes to protecting your investment, try and look at it differently ;-)

Avoid over washing hair.  Most stylists will recommend around 2-3 times a week.  When you do wash it, take care in not only using ultra moisturizing shampoos and conditioners, but being gentle when washing your hair.  Comb through hair with your fingers while conditioner is soaking to avoid breaking and splitting extensions from combing and brushing after your shower.

Get regular trims.  Be sure to trim ends every 6-10 weeks to keep extensions looking fabulous for longer.

Avoid over styling with heat tools.  When you do use one, and I know you will, ABSOLUTELY use a heat protectant.  Make sure you check the bottle to ensure it covers the temperature you use when styling.  Try also blowdrying at lower setting or skipping the step all together once a week.

Condition. To keep your extensions vibrant and shiny, use a conditioning masque once a week.  Although I recommend this for everyone, extensions NEED this to avoid looking dull and frail.

Choosing the Right Hair Clippers and Trimmers

With all of the options available, it can be a little overwhelming to choose the best product for you.  Before deciding on a pair of Hair Clippers and Trimmers, you might want to ask yourself the following questions to help you decide.

  • What am I using the Clippers and Trimmers for?
  • What features are important to me?
  • What additional items do I want to see included?
  • Do I need a rechargeable or corded?
  • Does the item come with a stand?

Yes, I know, who would have thought there were SO many different features to a pair of Clippers and Trimmers, but like any other important purchase, it is important to know your stuff!

What are Hair Clippers?

Hair clippers are a tool primarily used by professional hairdressers, however, it’s now possible to purchase clippers designed for home use that can provide a professional look to a home haircut.

 What are Hair Trimmers?

The name ‘trimmer’ refers to trimmers that can be used to cut beards, moustaches, sideburns and neck hair.

What Features are Important to me?

Do you require a wet ‘n’ dry feature?  Do you require a stubble setting (Trimmers)?  Do you require a variety of cutting positions?  These are all additional features that come with certain tools.

What Additional Items are Included?

Include with most clippers/trimmers is usually an assortment of additional items. These can include lubricating oil, barbers scissors, barbers combs, cleaning brushes, neck brushes, cape’s, sectioning clips, blade guard, instruction videos and ear styling guides.  Be sure to check to see that the items YOU need are included in your purchase.

What Kind of Power do I need?

Hair Clippers and Trimmers usually come in either rechargeable or corded varieties.  If you are at a salon and find the cord to be cumbersome, then a rechargeable option is better for you.  Also with the rechargeable option, you usually get a charging stand to hold your tool, which is an added storage bonus!

If you have any questions or would like to know more about choosing the right pair of Hair Clippers and Trimmers, please contact us.  We’d LOVE to hear from you!

Happy Thursday!

Fit for a Queen: The Hairstyles of Kate Middleton

Ahhhh Kate….the real life fairytale of an ordinary girl that grew up to become a princess and one day a queen.  Every girls dream come true!  I believe it was a role she was destined for and fills with the utmost elegance and grace.  In a world of blurred boundaries, it’s so refreshing to see a fashion and beauty icon that is truly 100% lady.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, was as usual a head-turner as she arrives at the “Our Greatest Team Rises” Olympic Concert held at Royal Albert Hall on Friday (May 11) in London, England. Kate Middleton, who usually wears her long hair down, surprised us by pulling all her hair up into an intricate updo hairstyle this time. It’s very cool and chic — just what you’d expect to see from the Duchess.

How to create:

  1. Pull back the top part of your hair and pin around ear-height.
  2. Braid the pieces on both sides of your head and cross over each other over the pins.
  3. Braid the rest of your hair about half-way down.
  4. Twist all your braids into a soft bun and secure with pins.

(above picture and article courtesy of prohaircut.com)

Kate’s signature long, luminous brunette locks never disappoint.  The key to achieving hair like the Duchess is in the maintenance.  Using a good quality Shampoo and Conditioner, weekly Hair Masks and and a daily Heat/UV Protectant can all contribute to revitalizing your hair.  To achieve a style like Catherine, use a big barrelled curling iron like the Coriliss Magic Wand 26mm, holding for about 10 seconds and slowly releasing so curl holds it shape.  The idea is for a polished curl here, so use a hairspray or wax to hold the curl once its cooled.  Who says we can’t look like a princess ;-)

Happy Monday!

Blonde and Beyond: Caring for Blonde Hair

carrie underwood 2

Do blondes really have more fun?  I believe so, although I am slightly biased on the matter ;-)   I love blonde hair, I mean I have tried my plethora of shades and styles, but usually revert back to blonde in order to satisfy my inner goddess.  The trouble with blonde hair though is it tends to act out more.  Due to bleaching and highlighting, hair becomes dry, damaged and dull and requires a lot more care to look as sleek and shiny as our brunette counterparts.

Here are some tips and tricks to caring for your blonde:

Blonde hair is more fragile then darker shades and tends to look more dull and frizzy.  Ensure you are using a good colour shampoo every day to not only preserve your colour but also ensure hair looks shiny and vibrant.  I really love Kerastase reflection bain chroma riche shampoo.

To avoid dry, brittle hair, use a deep conditioning mask at least once a week, twice if you dye your whole head blonde.  I have been using the Moroccanoil Restorative Hair Mask all summer and LOVE what it’s done for my blonde.

Brassiness has to be my worst enemy.  Luckily I have learned ways to avoid it, like using a purple shampoo every week.  I really like the one from Aveda, a little pricey but smells AMAZING and works wonders on eliminating brassy blonde.

To add vibrancy and luminosity back to your blonde, use a shine serum/oil such as Kerastase elixir ultime.  Infused with a bunch of good-for-your-hair ingredients, your blonde will look ultra shiny and healthy without weighing it down and looking greasy.

Most of all, don’t wait too long between salon visits!  Blonde hair is high maintenance, and although worth every effort, needs to be done on a regular basis to avoid the unintentional ombre effect.

Thanks for reading!!!!!!  I LOVE hearing all of your comments and questions, keep them coming!
