Cleaning & Storing Your Flat Iron

You invest good money in your hairstyling tools so taking care of them is important if you want them to continue to perform their best and last. Cleaning your flat iron and storing it properly will help you achieve both of these things and following these simple steps only takes a few minutes of your time.

*Before you do any of the following, please make sure your hair straightener is cool and unplugged.

  • Before or after every use, wipe the plates of your styling iron with a soft, damp cloth. This will remove any hairstyling product from the plates and help avoid build up form on and around the plates of your flat iron.
  • If you have not yet cleaned your flat iron and notice build up and residue on and around the plates, wipe them down with the soft, damp cloth and use a moistened Q-Tip to get into any creases and clean any edges. Never use anything sharp to clean your plates as this can end up scratching and ruining the plates of your hair iron.
  • Wipe down the outer part of your hair iron with the damp cloth and make sure your flat iron is completely dry before using it.
  • When you are not using your flat iron store it in a safe, dry place such as a drawer or cupboard away from water. Place it in a carrying case or wrap it in a soft towel to avoid any scratching or damage.
  • Never wrap the cord around the flat iron as this can cause tangles and breakage. Simply fold the cord up as it would have been when you received it and secure it with either the attached velcro strap or elastic band. (see picture below)
  • I highly suggest investing in a heat mat or flat iron stand in which you can place your flat iron while in use. This will help avoid the chances of burning any counter tops or tables.
  • NEVER lay your flat iron on the carpet and make sure that if you put it down there is nothing close by; towels, hair clips etc that could catch fire or get melted and stick to your hot flat iron.
